Strum Consulting was engaged to provide Civil Engineering and Surveying Support for the construction of a new maintenance facility for Miller Waste Systems Inc. The Halifax Material Recovery Facility (MRF) is a two-stream system (fiber and containers) that processes 20 000 tonnes on an annual basis. The Halifax MRF is operated by Miller Waste Systems on behalf of HRM; Miller Waste is responsible for all operations including marketing of the end product.
Miller Waste Systems offers a full range of collection services to the commercial sector ranging from organics, recycling, C&D, and garbage with roll-offs, front end’s, and side loaders. Miller Waste also services a four-stream residential contract for the Halifax Regional Municipality and specializes in the transportation of international waste and asbestos removal.
The new facility is being constructed by Bird Construction in Burnside Industrial Park (Dartmouth, NS) as a Design Build Project. Strum is a member of Bird’s selected Design Build Consultants and is working closely with the other design team members, Bird Construction, and the owner. Strum is completing a site topographic survey, site servicing and grading design, building layout, construction review, and location certificate preparation.
Miller’s new maintenance facility will be approximately 30,000 square feet including an office block, parts storage, training facilities, and several large maintenance bays. The site where the building is located is approximately 7 acres in size and includes separate parking for staff and a large yard for fleet vehicles.
Construction is expected to begin in 2014.
