Hatchery Water Supply Evaluation
Strum coordinated a large scale groundwater supply evaluation program for a world class Aquaculture Developer in Nova Scotia. Using a poorly understood inventory of existing wells drilled over the past 25 years, Strum developed a pump testing program, coordinated pump test activities and carefully monitored water discharge quantity and quality to assess long term supply for a proposed on land fish hatchery operation. Data was used to determine overall long term pumping yield, well interference effects and water quality characteristics relative to rearing fry and smolt species. A pumping rate evaluation helped determine the most efficient pumping wells and their respective water withdrawl rates, and identified potential for damage to pumping systems from groundwater minerals and soft bedrock horizons. Mitigation steps were identified prior to bringing the system on line.
